Beginner's Boxing Course for Women

Get 2017 started with a BOOM!
Our first beginner's course for the new year starts on Tues Jan 17 at 7.30pm. It runs over  8 weeks and covers the very basics of boxing. Read more here.

So if you've been thinking about learning to box, or taking up boxing for fitness, take a look at what some others have said about our course, maybe they'll help you make up your mind?

Kate - a new Mum
I started at Box 4 Fitness with the beginner's course, 3 months after having my baby and I love it! The instructors are fantastic and I have enjoyed every minute. I highly recommend Kate and the team who are all supportive, knowledgeable and friendly. Keep up the good work! - Kate Aitchison, Rochdale

Jo - got her fitness and confidence back
I did the Level 1 boxing course because I found that you get a lot more out of the other boxing fitness classes as you're learning the techniques and rules of amateur boxing. Kate is an amazing coach and makes you go beyond what you think you can achieve and the women around you are so supportive. Your fitness levels improve massively, you feel strong and that's great for your confidence and self-esteem. I've recently completed the silver award: it was tough, challenging but so rewarding. I'm fitter, happier and healthier than I've been for years and met the best group of women ever. I'd say to anyone come down and have a go, get on the course; it really can be a life changer - Jo Ruane, Todmorden

Debra- boxing's best for stress relief
I completed the beginners course (Level 1) last year. I started as a complete novice to improve my fitness levels and to try something different. The basic skills I learnt enabled me to participate in many of the other boxing /fitness classes available. The instructors are motivating and good fun. You can work at your own level without feeling judged, and the members are friendly and welcoming.
The outlet boxing gives you after a day at the office should be referred to as a therapy! - Debra Priestley, Hebden Bridge

To book onto the course, text or call Kate 077 3243 3243 or like our facebook page and message us there.

Iron Women - starts Wed 4 Jan

What's it all about?
Getting stronger, getting fitter and feeling more confident.

Over 12 weeks you will learn how to lift weight correctly, whether it's a barbell, dumbbell, kettlebell or your own bodyweight. This is a non-boxing session, we concentrate on good form, safe technique and building confidence.

What are the benefits?
  • You'll increase your overall strength
  • Improve your muscle tone
  • Gain confidence from feeling stronger and more capable
  • Learn new techniques and get fitter
  • You'll meet like-minded women and train in a supportive, all female atmosphere
Who's it for?
Any woman (16+) who wants to get stronger, improve her posture and learn how to lift.

How the sessions are run
Each week we focus on a few lifts/exercises and try to improve our 'PB' (Personal Best) on weight or number of repetitions in a given time. So it doesn't matter whether you can deadlift 20kg or 120kg - you're working to beat your score last time, not matching yourself against anyone else.

If you thrive on competition, you can make up a team and pace yourselves against each other, posting your results on the facebook group page.

What's the cost? 12 sessions for £55 or £60 if paying £5 per week over 12 weeks.

Booking Places are limited - If you'd like to reserve a spot or have any questions, text or call Kate 077 3243 3243.

Closing for 2 weeks holiday

This year our last training session will be Speed Pads on Wed 21 Dec at 6.15pm - special edition with knockout Christmas beats to throw those killer combinations to!

We re-open on Wed 04 Jan 2017 with Boxercise (Beginners session) at 10.15am and the first in our series of Iron Women training sessions at 6.15pm.

It's good to take a break from hard training every few months and re-feed, relax and enjoy the company of your friends and family. Some brisk walking or running will blow the cobwebs away and keep your legs in check for the New Year.

It's been a brilliant year at the gym, some of you have come a really long way with your fitness and improving your health. I look forward to more of this next year.

Well loved and enjoyed by so many at the gym, this speed pads course is open to beginners as well as those who've done it before.

The combinations are broken down to just a few moves initially and built up week by week at a pace that you can manage.

If you've already done some speed pads then we've got new material for you!

Boxercise

Every Monday (over 50's), Wednesday and Friday morning we get the gloves on for Boxercise at the gym timetable here.

It's a non-contact training session using focus pads and gloves to throw punches and combinations in a stress busting workout you'll find hard to beat.

Fighting fit fifties
Monday's are a mixed session (men and women), specifically for over 50's (or thereabouts) with a low impact workout and modifications for various levels of fitness and ability.

A social class with plenty of laughter and support from fellow Boxercisers.

Women's Boxercise
Wednesdays and Fridays are a mixture of padwork, bagwork, plenty of strength and conditioning and cardio too. The format changes every session so it's never boring, you'll find time flies once you get into a few rounds of punching.

We promote a supportive and friendly atmosphere (women only in these sessions) that you will find different to any other regular gym.

You're first session is free so if you fancy trying it out, email kate@box4fitness.co.uk
All Boxercise sessions are drop in and are £5 or £35 for 8.

Here's a few FAQ's

What if I can't make all the sessions?
If you're going to miss 1 or 2 of the sessions over the 8 week course, you will be able to catch up so don't let this stop you from doing it.

I don't want to hit anyone or get hit, will I have to do this?
No. You'll hit another person's glove, a focus pad or a punch bag. This is a glove contact course so no getting hit!

I'm not fit, will I manage the course?
Yes, you can work at your own pace and we'll help you develop your fitness. This is a coach-style course and not a fast paced, group fitness session.

Wed 6 April - Self Defence for Girls

We're getting the workshop programme finalised this week and the course material ready to go.
This year, we're going to include the 'I pledge' campaign in celebration of International Women's Day.

I pledge to...
We'll be asking the girls to make a pledge based around topics that include helping other girls and women achieve their ambitions, challenging gender bias language and behaviour and supporting girls in sport.

Stop it before it starts
Abusive language and behaviour towards girls is often accepted as 'banter' or 'just a joke' and can be damaging to their confidence and self respect. We aim to break this cycle by teaching girls to speak up, question bullying behaviour and support each other confidently in these situations.

This is often all that is needed to stop a situation from escalating.

You can find out more about the course here.

Booking only - limited numbers
This workshop is booking only and requires online payment to secure a place. Please email kate@box4fitness.co.uk or text 077 3243 3243

Wednesday Warriors starts 09 March

Our annual Valley Warriors mud-fest is happening in Leeds on June 26th this year so we have 16 weeks to get in shape for the 12km obstacle event.

What is Warrior Training?
An hour of (non-boxing) physical training that includes strength and conditioning work, short runs, sprints, and outdoor circuits.

Who's it for?
The training is specifically designed for those entering the Total Warrior event as part of our team but is open to anyone who wants to join in and get fit. You are also welcome to join in our training if you are part of a different team or entering as an individual.

Cost
You can drop in and out of these sessions for £5 or buy all 16 sessions for £70 (£10 saving). If you are a Box 4 Fitness monthly member, you can attend these sessions as part of your membership.

What to wear?
Normal gym gear to begin with for the next few weeks then we plan to go outside as the weather warms up (she says hopefully). If you don't own a pair of trail shoes and are participating in the event, I'd recommend getting some and wearing them in beforehand. Please post on the facebook group
for suggestions on brands from others. I have a pair of innov8 X tallon trail shoes which have lasted me well for 3 years so far but they are a bit pricey at around £80.

Can I join the team?
The Valley Warriors team is now full at 24 people and we have another team on the go headed up by Rhea Carsmith so if you do want a place, let us know and we'll put you on the reserve list if anyone drops out. You can also register as an individual, train with us and then join the team for the event on the day.

If you have signed up for our team, you need to get yourself to Wednesday Warriors training as often as possible between 9 March and June 26. Circuit classes run every Tuesday and Saturday as an alternative if you can't make the Wednesday training every week.

If you'd like to join in the fun, but not compete, you are welcome to do this too.

Check out our team video from the first year we did it!

Next beginners course for girls and women starts Tues 8 March

When?
Every Tuesday evening 7.30-8.30pm for 8 weeks. Starts 8 March, 2016.

Who is it for?
Any female over the age of 11 who wants to get fit, learn the skills and benefit physically from boxing as a form of exercise.

If you want to get into the ring and compete - this is where to start. The course is accredited by the Amateur Boxing Association - Boxing Awards scheme and is the pathway to competition.

How?
We teach glove to glove contact (so no hitting an opponent or getting hit) and punch focus pads and bags. We work in pairs and each week, add a new technique as well as practising what we've already learned.

This is suitable for people who just want to learn how to move around and punch properly so they can take what they've learned into a Bootcamp or other boxing fitness session.

Where?
We run these Box 4 Fitness courses at Hebden Bridge Boxing Club, Mt Pleasant Mill, Ribstone St, Mytholmroyd (HX7 5LR) Behind Firth Glass, opposite the park on Midgeley Rd (access via rd leading to Zion Terrace)

Why?
The benefits of this type of training  are both physical and mental. Boxers are some of the fittest athletes in the world but you don't have to be fit to start this programme. It's hard to beat as a stress reliever and is particularly good for building confidence and all over body strength.

Here's a great article that tells you more.

How much?
The cost of the course is £60 with a £30 online deposit. This covers 8 weeks of training and a medal and certificate after assessment.

How to book
Text or call Kate 077 3243 3243 (faster response) or email kate@box4fitness to reserve your place and pay a deposit.

We look forward to welcoming you to the gym!

Friday Boxercise is back this week!

We're back in business on a Friday morning at 9.30am as from this week! I still have another 2 weeks of outreach work to do but I'll be back with you in the gym on Friday 12 Feb.

In the meantime, 2 guest instructors, Amanda and Rhea will be running the show for your training pleasure!

This is a great class for beginners and seasoned punchers too.

Monday, January 11, 2016

No Friday Boxercise this week or next (15 & 22 Jan)

Apologies to my regulars and anyone new who's thinking of coming to this session. I have some important work to do with a school over the next 2 Fridays and have been unable to get cover for the class.

Wednesday Boxercise
We're still training on Wednesday mornings at 10.15am as usual. The Saturday morning KO Circuit at 10am may also be an option for you in the meantime?

Once again, sorry for any inconvenience this causes.

We are back in this week - come train with us!

Despite the floods, we're back at it tonight from 6.15pm with Bootcamp for those of you that can make it. We're going to ease you back in slowly and then let you loose on the bags for a good old tear up!

It's going to be difficult for at least a few weeks getting to the gym in the evenings with the amount of traffic on the roads so please be patient, try and organise car shares if you can or consider the train? We're not far from Mytholmroyd Station - less than a ten min brisk walk.

Tuesday
Tomorrow, our first Circuits class kicks off with a new year special to beast away the mince pies and get you feeling alive again. Don't worry if you are late, we have time to run over this week as there's no 7.30pm session

Wednesday

Wednesday morning's Boxercise class at 10.15am - unsure how many people will make this so please text 077 3243 3243 or post on the Box 4 Fitness facebook page if you want to come and I will make sure the class takes place.

Kickboxercise for girls - Rhea's first and last class of the year before she heads off on her adventure! I will be taking over from next week. Starts at 4.30pm, new girls welcome.

Women's Boxing Training
We are covering all the training aspects of Level 3 during the first 8 weeks but this is open to anyone who has done level 1, Boxing Award. A coach style class with circuit style warm ups, footwork drills, body sparring, defence work and glove to glove contact. Starts 6.15pm

Friday
Boxercise at 9.30am. This is the first and last class at this time for a few weeks. I will confirm by Friday what time the class will continue to run at, but it looks like 12-1pm as of next week.

Please get in touch via text or facebook group page for a faster response if you have any questions or want to let me know you are coming for the first time.

Happy New Year!

My first blogpost of the year should have been on January 1st. It should have been a happy one, full of inspiring words and motivation to get you off the sofa and back into the gym. However, we flooded here in the Calder Valley on Boxing Day and although we're very grateful to have escaped the flood at our premises, our friends, neighbours and surrounding businesses were not so lucky.

We've been out and about for the past 8 days, shoveling and sweeping and filling sandbags, ferrying people about and just generally helping out where we can.

This means we're at least a week behind on lots of other stuff so if you've emailed or called or texted, please bear with us as we get back up to speed.

Bootcamp as usual tomorrow
Classes will go ahead as planned as from tomorrow with Bootcamp at 6.15pm. I know the roads will be chaotic with so many people going back to work so please don't worry about turning up late over the next few weeks as this gets sorted.

It will be strange to move from 'emergency mode' to 'business as usual' but I'm aware a lot of you need to get back in there and get rid of some aggression, not to mention the mince pies and selection boxes!

Although this whole experience has been heartbreaking, there have been so many positives, the strength and togetherness of our community has been overwhelming. The help and support we've received from others, in particular, the Muslim and Sikh communities has been both humbling and revitalising. Collectively what we've done in the past week or so has been nothing short of amazing.

When you are ready for it, we'll be in the gym, waiting to support you in whichever way we can. Here's to new beginnings and a happy 2016!
